Friday Recap: Wake Too Good for VT, USC Gets Its Revenge, The Ville Rocks UNC, Several 4-3 Nailbiters

Friday brought us several close ones as 6 matches finished with a 4-3 final score though of course there were several that weren't as close most notably 3 of the 4 in Indian Wells.  

The big upset of the day came in Louisville as the #29 Cardinals stunned #10 North Carolina 5-2.  It looked like #7 Texas A&M might get picked off too however the Aggies rallied late and held off #35 Mississippi State 4-1.  #33 Drake came back from 3-0 down to stun #22 Harvard 4-3 and #23 LSU pulled out a tight 4-3 win on the road at #60 Alabama.

In the biggest match of the day #12 Wake Forest ran its winning streak to 4 with a 5-2 win over #16 Virginia Tech.  The Demon Deacons cruised past Va Tech in doubles and then Noah Rubin made it 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 beat down of Amerigo Contini at #1 singles.  Jon Ho would extend the lead to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win at #4 singles over Hunter Koontz before Virginia Tech's Edoardo Tessaro would put the Hokies on the board with a come from behind 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Christian Seraphim at #5 singles. Romain Bogaerts would clinch the win for Wake Forest with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win at #2 singles over Andreas Bjerrehus and then the teams would split the 2 remaining matches after the clinch.  

Wake Forest now sets its sights on #6 Duke with Wake making the short trip to Durham on Sunday.

Louisville head coach Rex Ecarma picked up career win #400 today with a 5-2 stunner over #10 North Carolina.   The doubles point came down to a tiebreak at #2 which Louisville pulled out (not sure what the TB score was though because it isn't listed anywhere).  Louisville ran through North Carolina in singles by picking up 4 1st sets and finishing 3 of them in straight sets with Albert Wagner clinching it at #3 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Esben Hess-Olsen.  

North Carolina is still a good team but they just aren't a great team without Brayden Schnur who missed his 5th straight match since retiring on 2/28 against Minnesota's Leandro Toledo.

A week ago Drake got stunned by UNC Wilmington in the opening round of the USF Spring Break Classic and now here they are a week later coming off back to back top 40 wins after winning a 4-3 thriller today over #22 Harvard  The Bulldogs fell behind 3-0 but managed to come all the way back by getting a pair of come from behind wins from Ravi Patel and Calum MacGeoch at 4 and 5 and then had its team leader Alen Salibasic hold off Denis Nguyen 6-3 in the 3rd to clinch it.  Drake will go for the title tomorrow against #30 San Diego.

"Getting our doubles line-up back is always good," Head coach Brett Masi expressed after the match. "It has been our strongest line-up this season. To get the break back at the No. 1 spot and clinch the point gave us the momentum in singles. We just rolled with it all match."

We had a great opportunity to get the doubles by having a match point at 5-3 and then serving for it and at 5-4 in the No. 1 position. We really struggled to gain a foothold in any singles match early and just simly didn't execute. We're disappointed in that, but we'll bounce back and be ready for Harvard tomorrow.

Denver's Yannik James fought off 4 match points in the 3rd set of the deciding match to propel Denver past Indiana 4-3.  James served at 4-5, 15-40 and managed to hold then fought off a match point in the tiebreak as well.

LSU senior Chris Simpson won the deciding match 7-5 in the 3rd at #2 singles to give LSU a tight 4-3 win over Alabama.  Simpson led 5-2 lead in the 3rd set before dropping the next 3 only to hold for 6-5 then break to win it.

"He (Chris Simpson) was ahead early and he showed poise to get another chance to win," said head coach Jeff Brown. "It was a good show of toughness and a good team win. We showed a lot of hear and it is good to see us get a win when we are not at our best."

"They jumped on us in doubles," Brown said. "We were able to maintain our confidence anyway and we showed a lot of trust in each other. We showed fight which is what you have to do on the road."

Mississippi State threw everything but the kitchen sink at Texas A&M but the Aggies came back from dropping the doubles point for just the second time this year to defeat State 4-1.  5 of 6 singles matches went to a 3rd set and it looked like it might be State's night when they had break leads in the 3rd at #3 and #5 and had just forced a split at #1 and were on serve at #6 early in the 3rd.  However Texas A&M's Shane Vinsant would pull away at #1 singles and despite letting a 5-2 lead slip away at #6, Texas A&M's Max Lunkin would hold on and win 7-5 in the 3rd.  The other matches were halted with both on serve with the match at #5 at 8-7 in the 3rd set tiebreak.

“That was a tough match, but still can’t say enough about our guys and their fight against the No. 7 team in the nation,” MSU coach Matt Roberts said. “We had a great crowd and a lot of energy, but it was a back-and-forth match and Texas A&M pulled it out.”

“A&M had a few more top 10 matches under their belt this season and it showed as they played the big points well,” Roberts said. “Now we have to get our focus on LSU for this Sunday.”
