It has become customary over the last several years to see schools play doubleheaders against perceived "lighter" schools but very rarely do you ever see the bigger school actually lose one of these - until today. #64 Clemson and Mercer met in Charlotte for a doubleheader and after Clemson took the opener 4-0 Mercer turned the tables on them in the nightcap and stunned the Tigers 4-3. According to Mercer's recap it is the Bears first ever win against an ACC school although they had previous beaten Clemson but it was back in 1939 which was 14 years before the ACC was founded.
Clemson won the opener 4-0 although Mercer was ahead in the 3 matches that were abandoned at the time of the clinch. In the second match Clemson head coach Chuck McCuen made some changes to his doubles lineup and those changes ended up coming back to hurt him. Robert Dudley, who played at #1 with Luke Johnson in the first match, was pulled from the lineup and replaced by Ryan McMullan who played with Johnson at #3. McMullan hadn't played a doubles match all fall and in fact had only played 2 doubles match in the previous 2 years with both of those coming coincidentally enough with Dudley. Johnson and McMullan lost 6-1 at #3 and Mercer's Arnav brothers clinched the point with a 6-4 win at #1. In singles play, 5 of the 6 matches finished in straight sets with Clemson winning at 1, 2, and 6 and Mercer taking 3 and 4. The match came down to a third set at #5 between Clemson's newest roster addition, Tennessee transfer Jess Jones, and Mercer's 6'6" sophomore Ruben Vanoppen. Vanoppen went 3-10 last season in dual-match play while Jones went 6-8 but 1 of those 6 wins came when he played in the deciding match against Troy so you figured he'd be able to use that experience to pull through. Vanoppen made sure it didn't happen this time and won it 6-4 in the 3rd.
Note: Mercer's wins at #4 and #5 singles were both Universal Tennis Rating upsets with Clemson's guys having a UTR of more than 1.0 higher than Mercer's guys.

A day after getting blanked by Florida Gulf Coast, St. John's rebounded with a big 4-3 win over Miami in a match that came down to a pair of guys that had each joined their respective teams in the last week. St. John's newest addition, Dusan Vukicevic, made his presence felt by coming back from a set down at #6 singles to beat Miami's Fermin Calvo 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and clinch the victory for the Red Storm. St. John's also captured the doubles point and picked up wins from Roberto Livi and Andrei Crapcenco at #3 and #5. The most surprising result was Livi's thrashing of Max Andrews at #3 because Andrews had a great fall racking up a team high 14 wins including his last 6.

The weather pushed the schedule around on Saturday but #17 Texas Tech held it together and ended up being the big winner by going 2-0 with wins over Pacific and New Mexico and they did it without its #1 Felipe Soares (see Masi's comments below). Pacific and Arizona each got a win on the day with Pacific knocking off Arizona 4-3 and Arizona knocking off New Mexico 4-2. New Mexico came away empty handed on the day going 0-2. "I am very encouraged by our performance today," head coach Ryan Redondo said. "We started out this morning against Arizona in freezing weather with some snow coming down. After two extremely tight matches that we lost yesterday, I saw the guys come out with more purpose and determination to stick to their commitments. i think we could have closed out Arizona quicker, but, as every great team in college tennis does, they fight back-they push back. After earning the doubles point quickly Daniel Alameh, Miguel Diaz, and Sem Verbeek came through for us with some high level tennis. Sem clinched the match in the third set against a player that has been in the top 30 in the rankings. With an hour to rest and get treatment, we took on the 17th ranked team of Texas Tech and put them on their heels. We took out two starters in Miguel and Jose and to be honest, I think we played better and competed the way in which we expect much more in the loss to Tech. Bernardo Oliveira had a great learning experience taking his match 6-1 in the third at #5 and Alameh and Sem were in three sets before Alameh went down in the third leaving Sem's match stranded at 3-3 in the third at #1. We get a much needed day off tomorrow and then we are right back at it with a rematch vs. New Mexico and Arizona. We strive for perfect effort in everything we do, everything counts. So, we have a lot to take care before Monday."

"We played without Felipe [Soares] today, which was by design," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "I wanted to challenge the guys. To win the matches we did, in the way we did, without our No. 1 player in doubles and singles was pretty strong. It shows how deep we are. When we put Felipe in the lineup, we're really going to be tough everywhere through the lineup. To see our guys play higher than maybe they're supposed to be at the end of the year, and they can handle that, it's a good thought for me. "
"In the first match, I was really proud of the guys in
doubles," Masi said. "They stepped up and New Mexico is very good in
doubles. Winning the No. 1 match to clinch it with a freshman and sophomore who
haven't played together more than three times was pretty big time. It shows we
have a bright future."
"We needed to see how the bodies were going to react in
the cold and playing a fourth match in two days," Masi said. "We
matched up pretty well with Pacific in a few spots. We put the pressure on
them. I think it's great to be 4-0. I think it's good for us to build our

#16 Virginia Tech opened its season in impressive fashion as it went on the road and beat an up and coming Alabama team 5-2. Joao Monteiro moved up #1 after tearing it up in the fall and he didn't disappoint at the top spot with a straight set win over Alabama's Korey Lovett. VT also picked up wins from Amerigo Contini, Andreas Bjerrehus, and Aaron Gomez at #2, #4, and #5 while Bama got wins at #3 and #6 from Becker O'Shaughnessey and Danny Kerznerman.
Alabama was able to bounce back later in the day and the Tide knocked off Georgia State 6-1.

“I’ve told the guys all season long – doubles are going to
come down to tiebreakers,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “It just will, and
it’s not any surprise. You just have to be comfortable in the moment. They
played more solid and came up with the serves. I think we pressed a little bit
and tried to do a little more than we had to in the doubles. But we still
played some pretty solid doubles.”
“We did a really good job in doubles,” Oklahoma assistant coach
Bobby Reynolds said. “We came out with good energy and played the big points
well. In singles, our guys were still trying to shake off the first-match
jitters and nerves and everything that goes with starting the season off. The
guys played really well and fought hard. Some of the first sets went our way,
and then Georgia Tech picked it up in the second sets. The guys found a way to
come out in the third set and get on top of them and roll them.”
“He did great,” Reynolds said. “He has gelled with this team
so well. He has only been here three days with these guys and with the
relationships he’s made it’s almost like he’s been here two years. He was out
there playing with a smile and he’s still learning college tennis.”
“Everybody just played solid,” Reynolds said. “I don’t think
anyone played their best tennis, but I was really happy with the level. I’m
hoping that going into tomorrow these guys bump it up a little. Ole Miss will
be tough in the morning. They are a pretty good team, so we’ll be looking
forward to it.”
