ITA Releases First Rankings of 2016

Earlier today the ITA released its first team and individual rankings of the 2016 season. The individual rankings are based off the computer so therefore they had several big shakeups from the initial rankings which were based solely off last season's rankings with the seniors removed.

I did my own Top 20 and took into account roster additions and subtractions from last season while the first 6 team rankings are done by the ITA's National Ranking Committee with each voter probably knowledgeable on their region but not much outside it. I highlighted all the teams below that moved at least 4 spots from the final rankings of last season and put them in green if they went up and yellow if they went down.

I thought Texas was ranked a good 10 to 15 spots too high after losing 5 of its starting 6 plus 1 of its top freshman.  Duke lost 4 of its top 5 so I thought at best they would be around #20. Baylor should have been 5 to 10 spots lower after losing 3 of its top 5. Tennessee should be closer to 100 than 50 after losing its top 2 along with 2 other contributors.

Stanford is probably ranked a good 10 spots too low and I think both Alabama and Arkansas are top 35 programs although they are both ranked near the bottom of the top 75. I think SMU is going to be a top 30 team with the addition of the Johnson brothers and with Samm Butler and Nate Lammons playing really well. Tulane is another team that is probably 5-10 spots better than its ranking because I think they'll be playing with a chip on their shoulders this year after just missing out on the NCAAs last season (Georgia Tech was last team in with 16.93 points while Tulane had 16.83).

It's hard to get too bent out of shape at this point because once the results start coming in everything will fix itself.

11 freshmen made the top 125 of the initial singles rankings with Ohio State's Hugo Di Feo the highest at #10. The only name that I wasn't really familiar with prior was UCSB's Nicolas Moreno de Alboran. The win that got him ranked was a 6-3, 6-2 win over SMU's Nate Lammons at the Jack Kramer Classic.

A few of the bigger names that were absent from the initial rankings are UCLA's Mackenzie McDonald, Baylor's Julian Lenz, Oklahoma's Andrew Harris, North Carolina's Brayden Schnur, Virginia's Collin Altamirano, Illinois's Aleks Vukic, and Wake Forest's Romain Bogaerts. Those guys aren't ranked because they didn't play in any fall college events (except Bogaerts he played in the fall he just didn't beat a ranked player).
