NCAA 2nd Round - South Florida & Columbia Pull Off Upsets - Other Seeds Advance

After a wild and crazy first round of the NCAA Tournament, we had a more tame second round with 9 of the 16 matches being shutouts. 14 of the top 16 seeds advanced with Columbia and South Florida pulling off the mild upsets.

#17 Columbia punched its second ever ticket to the Round of 16 with a 4-1 win over #14 Ole Miss. Columbia took the doubles point with wins at 2 and 3 but Ole Miss would take four opening sets in singles. Ole Miss's Nik Scholtz would even the match at 1-1 with a straight set win over Winston Lin at #1 but Columbia's Ashok Narayana and Shawn Hadavi would close out their respective matches in straight sets at 3 and 5 to put Columbia up 3-1. Columbia's Dragos Ignat, Mike Vermeer, and Bert Vancura would each take the 2nd sets after dropping the first and in a race to the finish line it'd be Vancura that would provide the clincher with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win at #6.

Comments from Columbia recap
"We knew that Ole Miss is very tough at home. They are very hard to beat here. So after Georgia Tech we thought we needed to win the doubles point," Howard Endelman, Associate Head Coach said.  "They are very strong at the top of the lineup, so we knew if we won the doubles point and put some pressure on them, it would give us a little edge heading into singles.  The guys played so well in doubles and I think it took some air out of the home crowd, which was good for us."

“I was on courts 5 and 6, so I couldn’t see the other courts but I could see the main scoreboard, and it seemed like every first set was in a breaker, or 5-5,” Endelman said.  “This match couldn’t have been any closer.  We have to give Ole Miss a lot of credit.  They won four first sets, but our guys, they all hung in there.  Bert’s opponent was playing great.  Bert just stayed around, stayed around and won the second set, and he was just incredible in the third.  It was probably one of the best sets I’ve ever seen him play.  {Shawn} Hadavi played a really good player and Shawn played one of the best tie-breakers I’ve ever seen him play.  They were just so tough.”

“Last year we snuck up on people. No one picked us to beat Vanderbilt. This year, in many ways, was much harder.  No one was surprised by us. But our goal was always to get back to the Sweet 16, and to beat Ole Miss in Oxford to get there, is just incredible,” Endelman concluded.

Comments from Ole Miss recap
"It was a very tough day," head coach Toby Hansson said. "Obviously it's disappointing when you lose. We thought we had a good chance to win this match today, and we just couldn't get it done."

"We came out a little slow in doubles and didn't have the energy and positive body language," Hansson said. "When things didn't go our way, we let it affect us a little."

"I told the guys we had an opportunity in singles, and even though we didn't play our best, we battled," Hansson said. "We had chances on several different courts.  I have to give Columbia a lot of credit for hanging around and never giving up on all the courts."

"Overall I am very pleased with the season," Hansson said. "With a little perspective I think the guys will realize that we've done some good things this year."

Comments from USF recap
"It was an amazing day for the guys and all the work they've put in," head coach Matt Hill said. "It's a huge day for the program as well. We push the envelope and try to show other teams we're a program that's going to be around for a little while."

"Virginia Tech has very good doubles, especially at No. 1 and No. 2. I thought our guys did a great job of playing smart and competing really well throughout the doubles," Hill said.

"Our guys took it to another level in singles," Hill said. "They continue to impress the coaches on the big stages and in the big moments. They really enjoy it and elevate their game."

Comments from Oklahoma recap
“Singles was solid,” head coach John Roddick said. “We didn’t dig any holes. The one spot where we got down, we got out of it and had control of that match when it finished. Doubles was close. It came down to a tiebreaker and a few points here or there. Overall we are playing better there.”

“It is pretty impressive to play like that at one,” Roddick said. “When you are moving the ball around like that and not making errors it is tough to handle.”

“He was just really patient,” Roddick said. “He hit solid ground strokes in rallies and wasn’t going for too much and didn’t leave it short either. He just really did a good job of forcing that guy into errors all day. He won 12 games to five. That is pretty solid.”

“We are going to get an idea of the practice schedule, but we are going to take a day off and then head out,” Roddick said. “We are ready to get it going and I think the guys are excited to play.”

Comments from TCU recap
"Obviously that doubles point gave us a tremendous amount of momentum going into singles," head coach David Roditi said. "That is some of the most competitive points I have ever seen at the No. 3 position and it was anyone's match. Guillermo came up with a huge ace down match point and our No. 2 team of Cameron Norrie and Trevor Johnson just keep getting it done. They are playing just such a high level and having so much fun. They are communicating and connecting and it is just fun to watch. The scary part is that we are winning doubles points and we can still play better. There is still room for improvement and that is exactly what we want going into next week.

"In singles, our guys came out focused and let that excitement from doubles keep them going. Cameron Norrie is just too good and he is just too much for some guys at the No. 3 position. Guillermo finally closed out his match and I thought it was a critical point in the match. Tulsa relies on (Alejandro) Espejo a lot to win matches and it was great to see him take that point away from them. Finally, it was only fair that one of our seniors got to clinch the match and especially Arnau. He was in the exact same situation against Tulsa a year ago and he cramped up. For him to be able to clinch and take this team to the Sweet 16 was fun to watch."

"I am proud of all of the guys," Roditi said. "Nick (Chappell) was playing a great match against a good player and was up a set. We all know that playing indoors is not Facundo's (Lugones) favorite, but he just kept fighting and fighting when it felt like things were going against him.

"I am ecstatic, but we just have to get a little bit better and I am sure that our coach Devin Bowen will continue to prepare this team like he has all season long. He really has been doing all the work. I do the videos and he does all the work and because of him, we will be ready for Waco."

Comments from Georgia recap
"We did a tremendous job at all three doubles and all six singles," said head coach Manuel Diaz. "I thought we played high-level tennis. We had great competition, and our guys rose to that level. It was probably as complete a match as we played all year, so I think we are ready going into the next round. Our guys worked hard for this, and I'm sure they're not satisfied."

Said Manuel Diaz: "It feels great going to Waco and making the round of 16 for the 12th year in a row. We'll get over there and get used to the facility. It's probably a little windier than we are accustomed to, so we have to adapt to all of those things. We are looking forward to getting over there Monday morning."

Comments from Texas recap
"Our team really fought hard today," Head Coach Michael Center said. "Søren had this refuse-to-lose mentality today, even when faced with adversity. He has had a heck of a year, so for him to come back and clinch that match for us was fitting."

"We're undefeated when we get the doubles point," Center continued. "That comeback on court three was pretty exciting. That's got to be encouraging for those guys moving forward. We feel like if we get that doubles point, we're going to be a pretty tough team to handle."

Comments from Soren Hess-Olesen
"I was ready to battle and fight," Hess-Olesen said. "I told myself that even if I'm not playing well, there's no reason not to fight."

"I got frustrated because I'm usually a little sharper. But that's also a credit to him, because he made me feel like I had to do something with the ball and hit winners," Hess-Olesen said.

"He's much more equipped to handle matches like this now," head coach Michael Center said of Hess-Olesen. "He doesn't panic. He got a little frustrated maybe. Deep down, he believes in himself."

"If I can say I fought my hardest out here in my last match, that's how I want to be remembered," Hess-Olesen said. "I know I can play better than I did today, but once I got over that stage, I said you might as well fight. There's no reason to hold back.

Comments from Virginia recap
"I was really impressed with Minnesota," said head coach Brian Boland. "They are an outstanding team and could have been a team that made it to Waco. They are as good, if not better, than some of the teams that advanced. They really helped us because we needed a competitive match and we got one today."

"Our doubles has just continued to improve and the level Ryan and Luca are playing at right now is special," said Boland. "Minnesota has one of the best doubles points in the nation, so the way we took it to them in doubles was huge. But give Minnesota, credit, they didn't back down in singles and gave us a fight."

"It is exciting to head off to the final site for the 12th straight year," said Boland. "I am really proud of that consistency. We know it will continue to get harder with each match, but we are ready for the challenge."

Comments from aTm recap
“I am really proud of this team and what they have been able to accomplish already this season,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “After doubles and the first sets were out of the way it turned into a real dogfight for the rest of the match. The match went back and forth all day, looked like we had it, then they looked like they had it. That’s how college tennis is and that is what makes team tennis so much fun to come out and watch.”

“We worked our way back into the match winning a couple first set tiebreakers,” Denton added. “Jordi dropping his tiebreaker in the first set was tough, but it set up for him to really grind out the match and come through for us. The tiebreakers allowed us to gain some momentum back from Oklahoma State after that doubles point.”

“It looked we had momentum, but then Jordi fell behind 5-4 after being up 4-2 in the third set and Jeremy was down a break on one,” Denton said. “Jordi had match point against him and Jeremy was not making the shots that we all know he can make. After Jordi and Jeremy made a couple shots to get back on the right side of things. Even with the law of averages saying we were going to get one of the two points, as a coach I was not 100 percent sure the match was over until I saw the final score on the board.

TOP QUOTE from Baylor recap
"I don't think that you try to evaluate your play as much during the NCAA tournament, because you just try to make it to the next day. You look to advance, and we advanced. It's a little less than a week before we play again, and we certainly hope that we play better. If we advance we will be thrilled that we advanced." - head coach Matt Knoll on the match

I got out to UNC and they played well and deserved their win. Court 6 was a great finish. I also like to scoreboard watch and stand in the same spot when i go but was moved by an official as "you can't stand there it's distracting". So I moved about 6 feet to my left. She did a great job!

I think they have a reasonable shot at upsetting Illinois, especially if Esben is fit enough to play singles.

And thanks for a great page.
