Let's start off with the biggest upset of the day as #40 San Diego State stunned city rival #21 San Diego 4-3. San Diego was hot going into this match and San Diego State was not. San Diego beat San Diego State 4-2 a month earlier and the Toreros were riding a 15-match winning streak while San Diego State limped to the finish line by splitting its final 6 matches including a loss to an unranked Nevada in the Mountain West semifinals. SDSU also lost its #6 to an injury and was playing a freshman, Santiago Cevallos, that had only played in 4 dual-matches all year (2-2). So fittingly the match would come to #6 singles and it would be Cevallos that would outlast senior Ciaran Fitzgerald 7-6 in the 3rd to clinch the win for the Aztecs.
It is a very disappointing end to the season for San Diego while San Diego State gets to take a swing at USC on Saturday.

On today’s match…
“We showed that we weren’t quite tough enough today. We
certainly got off to a good start all over the place. We played pretty well in
the doubles on all three courts, again. That’s something that we have done well
in the ladder stages of the season. But we are just putting ourselves in
situations where we are up in a match and we’re ready to close the door, but
for whatever reason we’re balking as a team. Too many of our guys are up break
points consistently and we’re missing the return of a serve or just making
unforced errors on those points. When we do that, we’re not even able to see
what the other guy can do. I think that was the biggest thing today. When we
had the momentum and lost it, we didn’t respond. And you have to respond. The
other team is going to make a push, it’s the NCAA Championships. I’m just
really disappointed that we didn’t respond better and believe in ourselves in
those moments when we had chances to close the door.”
On what UF needs to improve upon going into next season…
“We have to be physically and mentally tougher. We have to
find ways to ramp up the pressure each day so that we can develop more in those
areas. We’re hitting the ball well as our serving, returning and volleying is
all better as a team. I think our real weakness this year is that we weren’t
mentally tough enough. We just didn’t play with enough conviction and
confidence in the key moments of matches. So that’s an area that we have to
improve upon. Also, we have some guys that have to just get physically tougher
as some of them are still boys out there. We wilted in a couple of matches
today. So we just have to get them in the gym and get them in better shape.”

The third #3 seed to advance was #33 Drake as the Bulldogs beat #32 Louisville for the second time this season. Louisville started off fine by taking the doubles point and picking up three first sets however Drake would turn two of those around in addition to closing out two of its own. The biggest upset came at #1 singles as Drake's Alen Salibasic blew out ITA #5 Seb Stiefelmeyer 6-1, 6-2 though despite the lopsided score it wasn't the first match to finish. Ravi Patel was first off the court with a 6-3, 6-1 win at #4 over Chris Simich. Michael Lippens would pick up a win at #6 over Ben Stride but Drake closed out the final two courts with both Ben Mullis and Ben Lott holding on down the stretch to seal the win.

One of the best matches of the day took place in Norman with #28 Northwestern just getting past #34 Harvard 4-3. Harvard took the doubles point after Sebastian Beltrame and Jean Thirouin came back from 6-3 down to win 8-7(5) and then each team would each take three first sets. 5 of the 6 singles matches would be wrapped up in straight sets with Harvard getting wins from Denis Nguyen and Nicky Hu at 1 and 2 while Northwestern got wins from Konrad Zieba, Logan Staggs, and Alp Horoz at 3, 4, and 6. The final match left on court at #5 would come down to a 3rd set tiebreak and after Kenny Tao went up 6-4 things were looking good for Harvard. Northwestern's Fedor Baev got it to 6-5 and then according to Harvard's twitter things got nutty. Baev returned the Tao serve close to the line and Tao called it out which would have been the match but Baev's appeal to the chair was granted which made it 6-6 and then since it was Tao's 3rd overrule it resulted in a point penalty which made it 7-6 Baev. Baev would then hammer home an ace on the next point to give Northwestern the win. Tough, tough way to lose a match for Harvard.
Notes: the match was stopped by inclement early in singles and moved indoors. Play was stopped again early in the 3rd set of the deciding match at #5 due to a tornado warning.

A 1 hour and 12 minute doubles point started off the match between #20 Mississippi State and #50 Denver and in the end that doubles point turned out to be the difference as State outlasted Denver 4-3. Denver went up an early break on all 3 courts but Mississippi State would break back and end up winning both #1 and #2 doubles 12-10 in the tiebreak.
Mississippi State would extend the lead to 3-0 with wins from Mate Cutura and Julian Cash at 3 and 6 but Denver would have the lead on all the remaining courts. Henry Craig and Diogo Rocha would win in straights for Denver at 1 and 2 and Yannik James would win 6-4 in the 3rd at #5 to even the match at 3.
The final match on court would be at #4 singles between Denver's David Fox and State's Rishab Agarwal. Fox won the first set 6-2 but Agarwal took the second in a tiebreak winning the TB 7-2. Agarwal went up 2-0 in the 3rd but then dropped 3 straight and found himself down a break at 2-3. NC State's Nick Horton would go up a break in the 3rd and was serving at 4-3 needing to hold serve just two more times to seal the improbable comeback. Tulsa's Carlos Bautista wouldn't let it happen and would break Horton, hold, and break against to close out the win for Tulsa.
