Before I go through the matches I wanted to thank you guys on twitter for Periscoping some of the key points in the indoor matches where there wasn't streaming video available. Big shout out to Jeff McMillan and Drew Mastin who both did a great job letting me and many others follow the end of the Oklahoma/UCLA and Georgia/Texas matches. Jeff also had footage of many of the key moments in the Virginia/Columbia match as well. They say a picture is worth a thousand words - well if that's the case then a video is worth a million words. It's so much better to be able to watch and experience these matches on some kind of video because words can only tell you so much. Thanks again guys!!
The unpredictable Oklahoma doubles pairings surprised many of us by taking the doubles point with ease over UCLA. Both Harris/Ghilea and Webb/Papa won 8-4 at #1 and #2 doubles.
In singles play Oklahoma raced out to a 3-0 lead after Alex Ghilea and Spencer Papa won by identical 6-3, 6-4 score at #4 and #5 singles and it looked like Florin Bragusi was going to potentially make it 4-0 when he led Joseph DiGiulio 6-3, 5-5 at #4. However DiGiulio would hold for 6-5 then break Bragusi to send it to a 3rd set.
Mackenzie McDonald would put UCLA on the board when he handed Axel Alvarez his first dual-match loss of the year with a 6-4, 6-4 win at #1. Alvarez jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 2nd before McDonald won 6 of the next 7 games to close the match out.
Martin Redlicki had just broken Dane Webb to go up 3-2 in the 3rd at #3 singles when play would be stopped by a lightning delay and with this being the 4th delay the decision was made to move all remaining matches indoors.

Once indoors Redlicki held onto the break lead and finished off Webb 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 to trim the Oklahoma lead to 3-2.After taking the 1st set in a tiebreak, UCLA's Dennis Mkrtchian would break Andrew Harris to go up 5-4 in the 2nd but Harris would break back and eventually push the match to a tiebreak. Mkrtchian would control the 2nd set tiebreak just like he did the first and would close it out for a 7-6(5), 7-6(3) win to knot the match at 3.
In the deciding match OU's Mr. Clutch Florin Bragusi would go up 4-2 in the 3rd and would end up serving out the match at love to take the match clinching 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win to send Oklahoma on to the Quarterfinals.

On his team’s fight…
“They played really well at the top. (Mackenzie) McDonald
had a great match against Axel (Alverez). Axel played pretty well, he just
missed a couple of opportunities and ended up losing it and at a high level
that is what happens. He went on to play a really good match. I thought
(Martin) Redlicki did a great job of closing Dane (Webb) out in the third set
when they moved indoors. Dane had a couple chances to break back and didn’t
quite get there. Even Andrew (Harris) had a chance into the third. We got a
little unlucky and you’d like to think you’d get a couple of those points that
you need. But we didn’t get them today and our guys down low pulled it
through.”
On the rain delays…
“It’s hard on the staff. You have to make sure you have
everything when you come off. It was a difficult day. It’s tough on the guys to
go on and off the court. Our guys did a really good job handling that. They
kind of knew because when the weather is like that you kind of know. These guys
have dealt with days like that before with weather so it wasn’t something
they’ve never done. That helps with it and with the staff we have here it makes
it a little bit easier.”

"I was very happy with the way we competed. We had some
chances even in that last match. Had some chances to go up a break early in
that third set and just didn't get it. It's frustrating because we've lost so
many 4-3 matches this year in this exact same scenario. I guess it's a bit
typical of the type of year we've had. It was a good effort today and I'm proud
of our guys for hanging in there. But all in all, to come that close and not
get it is disappointing."
On the team's doubles play...
"I was pretty unhappy with our doubles to be quite honest. We just came out a little flat and did not play good doubles. I don't know if it was the delays or what, but we just didn't seem to play well. Both teams had to deal with the delays so that's definitely not an excuse. It just would have been nice to play a little better and give us that added confidence heading into singles."

"That was very high-level tennis," said Martin of
the McDonald-Alvarez showdown. "That could easily be an NCAA singles final
coming up here in the next week or so. It will be interesting to see how those
two players progress in the individual championships. That was a fun match to
watch and it was good to see Mackie rise to the occasion and get that win for
us."
With the momentum clearly shifting, the Bruins were
beginning to take control at the remaining three courts. Another weather delay,
this time for lightning, would soon follow and it was at that point that
officials decided to complete the match indoors.
"It I had my choice, it would have been nice to have been able to stay outdoors and have the matches that hadn't started yet go inside," said Martin. "But I've been around long enough to know that you just kind of do what you are told. I didn't even question it. I haven't been told the reasoning for sending us indoors after so many delays to keep us outside, but I guess I'll find out later. And we ended up winning two matches indoors so I can't say it hurt us."

In the other 9am match it was Georgia weathering the storm to hold off Texas 4-1. Georgia grabbed the doubles point with authoritative wins at 2 and 3. In singles Georgia would take 4 opening sets while Texas took 2 but it looked like it was going to be the other way around early on. Texas's Soren Hess-Olesen jumped out to a 4-1 lead on Georgia's Wayne Montgomery at #1 singles but the Bulldog freshmen would come storming back to take the opening set 7-6(5). Texas's Nick Naumann would lead Georgia's Nick Wood 5-1 at #5 singles only to see Wood come back and take the set 7-6(5).
Georgia's Nathan Pasha would never trail in his 6-3, 6-2 win over Adrien Berkowicz at #3 singles. Pasha jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the 1st before Berkowicz got it back on serve at 4-3. Pasha would then break and serve out the opening set. Pasha continued his dominance in the 2nd set and he was just 2 points (6-3, 5-2 (30-0) away from wrapping up a quick win when the match was halted due to lightning. Play was moved indoors and then within 60 seconds of the match restarting Pasha had given Georgia its 2nd point.
Georgia's Austin Smith was serving up 6-3, 4-3 when play resumed at #2 singles but Texas's Lloyd Glasspool would get the break and then hold for 5-4. Smith was probably starting to have flashbacks to his match from the SEC Championship against Jeremy Efferding when he led before a weather delay only to falter after the restart. However there would be no collapse this time as Smith would come back to clinch the match in a tiebreak with Lloyd Glasspool double faulting on match point.
It looked like Wayne Montgomery was going to seal the win for Georgia when he led Soren Hess-Olesen 7-6, 4-2 however Hess-Olesen would fight back to push it to a tiebreak. Montgomery would go up 6-4 in the tiebreak and would have 2 match points but he would go long with his forehand on 3 consecutive points to give Hess-Olesen a set point. Montgomery would then miss again with his forehand and with that we had a 3rd set coming up.

Just as that tiebreak was finishing Texas's George Goldhoff would put the Horns on the board with a 6-3, 6-4 win over a red-hot Ben Wagland.Things were starting to look up for Texas with Goldhoff winning, Hess-Olesen taking the 2nd, Clement Homs up a set, and Nick Naumann up 5-2 in the 2nd.
Texas's momentum swing would be short-lived because Hess-Olesen would go down an early break in the 3rd, Homs would drop the 2nd set, and Naumann would would see a 5-2 lead turn into a 6-5 deficit.
While Naumann served at 5-6, Georgia's Wayne Montgomery was up 5-3 in the 3rd and had just brought it to deuce when Hess-Olesen went down for the count with what appeared to be cramps. While Hess-Olesen was being attended to Nick Wood go up 30-40 on the Naumann serve and Naumann would then push a high backhand volley long to seal the comeback win from Wood. On beating WF after losing to them previously in the
season...
“To be able to beat a team like Wake Forest after losing to
them earlier in the year, it just really shows the work that Devin Bowen has
put into this team. From the mental standpoint, where they are more resistant
to the preparation part of tennis and I think that our guys could’ve gone on
for another two or three hours, because of their endurance.”
On rest day following today’s win...
“We get a day off now, so we have to decide if we want to
stay in Waco for another 36 hours or drive back, get the smell of Fort Worth
and return.”
On winning the doubles point...
“Winning the doubles point was huge, because both teams had
chances to win that set earlier and whoever loses a point [in doubles] is
affected mentally. I’d like to think that our team would’ve come back so strong
in the singles, whether they won that point or not, but it is a momentum
builder. It was an hour and a half. To be out there that long and to come away
with nothing would definitely challenge you and I think the combination of them
losing the doubles point and us winning the first five out six sets were huge
factors in our win.”

North Carolina took the all important doubles point with wins at 1 and 3 and then the Tar Heels would take 5 opening sets in singles with the 2 biggest ones coming at 1 and 2.
Illinois's Farris Gosea had an early break lead on Brayden Schnur but Schnur broke for 3-3 then held serve for 4-3 and would end up taking the tiebreak 7-5. Illinois's Jared Hiltzik served for the 1st set up 5-3 but Ronnie Schneider broke back and ended up taking the tiebreak by the same 7-5 score.
Illini #5 Aleks Vukic would even the match at 1-1 with an easy 6-3, 6-2 win but UNC's Esben Hess-Olesen would put UNC up 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Toshiki Matsuya at #6. Tim Kopinski would come back from a set down and roll over Brett Clark 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 at #3 to bring it to 2-2. Aron Hiltzik would make it 3-2 Illinois after he came from behind to beat Jack Murray 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

After a Hiltzik hold, Schneider would serve it out by hitting a volley winner from 40-15 to give UNC the 4-3 win.

Upon first glance you'd think this was a routine 4-0 Virginia win but this was anything but routine. After Virginia won the doubles point with wins at 1 and 3, Columbia came out firing in singles and took 3 opening sets and served for a 4th at #3 singles. Unfortunately for Columbia, Ashok Narayana would get broke serving at 5-3, 40-15 but Narayana would break back from 6-5 down to send it to tiebreak. The tiebreak was all Altamirano as he took it 7-0 and it seemed like that took a lot of the steam out of Columbia's engine as Virginia started turning around all the courts where they dropped first sets.
Despite rolling his ankle late in the 1st set, Ryan Shane was able to persevere and still get past #17 Winston Lin 6-3, 6-4. Thai-Son Kwiatkowski made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Max Schnur at #4 singles. Schnur was only playing his 2nd dual-match in almost 2 months. Mitchell Frank and Alex Ritschard would take 2nd sets after dropping the 1st and Collin Altamirano would end up racing through the 2nd set to provide the clincher at #3 with a 7-6, 6-0 win over Narayana.
It was a very respectable performance from Columbia and had Narayana taken that 1st it would have been interesting to see if that would have changed anything.

“What a match. I thought we played really well in doubles,
and then they took some momentum from us in the second sets. It was really
strange. We jumped on them with five first sets and then they came roaring back.
Illinois has a great team and we knew that coming in, but I am just so proud of
my team.”
On turning it around after the second sets...
“We have played a very tough schedule. We have played
everybody. We are starting to get healthy again, and if you look at our senior,
Esben [Hess-Olesen], it is his second singles match since February. [We] put
him back in and he is playing singles and he won a huge match for us in
regionals. Again he got off quick and was able to give us some momentum. We
have been in some tough spots all year long, but our kids fight. We are sort of
used to this, so it was a great win.”

“I thought they did a great job in the doubles. They kicked us in the teeth a little bit in the doubles, but I felt that we responded really well. We made the doubles close, but we were not able to get back and that proved to be the difference today. In the singles, we talked about the team coming out and being relentless all the way through, and I thought we did a great job. On courts one and two there were late breaks serving for the first sets. If we win those first sets maybe it is a different story in how the rest of the match plays out. Those are two matches we lost and we lose the match 4-3. At the end of the day you have to give credit to North Carolina. We had great fans out here, great momentum, and our guys got down and fought back really hard. great doubles. To Columbia’s credit, they kept battling. They pushed us all the
way across the board today, which was great because we needed it. We’ve had
some adversity this year where the guys just stayed composed and just kept
working and things worked out well for us. Ryan [Shane] tweaked his ankle a
little bit and still finished the match. That’s pretty impressive. We believe
that he will be fine on Saturday. We have a day off which is nice. That works
to our advantage, and we will just try to get ready for the next match.”

“That’s a testament to the team. These guys are some of the
best fighters I have ever coached collectively as a team. They are never going
away. They have great guts and I have enjoyed so much coaching them this year
and that’s a big part of it. They just keep battling. They never let down. It’s
a fun team to be around.”

in this tournament.”

Texas A&M is headed back to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 1st time since 2001 after defeating Ohio State 4-3 in a match that was played at SMU in Dallas due to the weather situation in Waco.
The Aggies took the crucial doubles point after Jeremy Efferding and Jordan Szabo came back from a break down at 6-5 to win 8-7(5).
Texas A&M took 4 opening sets and Shane Vinsant would be first off the court with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #2. Ohio State's Ralf Steinbach would answer with a 7-6, 7-6 win at #6 over Jordi Arconada to make it 2-1 A&M but Jeremy Efferding would make it 3-1 A&M as he defeated Mikael Torpegaard 7-5, 6-4 at #1. Ohio State would tie it at 3 after Kevin Metka came back from a set down to defeat AJ Catanzariti 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 at #5 and Hunter Callahan defeated Harrison Adams 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at #4.
It all came down to a 3rd set at #3 between Texas A&M's Arthur Rinderknech and Ohio State's Herkko Pollanen. Rinderknech went up 4-2 in the 3rd but Pollanen would hold and break to even it at 4. Rinderknech broke right back and then after falling behind 15-30 he came back with 3 straight points to clinch a win over Ohio State for the 2nd time this season.

“Our guys did a great job. We came up here last minute. Both
teams had adversity to deal with. Obviously, a really close doubles point. It
comes down to a tiebreaker. Our guys played a great tiebreaker to win the
doubles point and that was, at it turns out, the difference in the match. With
so many close matches, we won four first sets and then they were able to turn a
match or two. Kind of like in a lot of these matches, with the ebb and flow,
you look like you’re going to win and you look like you’re going to lose. You
just keep in there and our guys were able to make the last shot to win the
match. It’s great for our program to be in the Elite Eight and have this
opportunity. We haven’t done that since I’ve been here. I’m really happy for
these guys and how hard they’ve fought.”
On adjusting to the move to Dallas…
“Like I said, difficult for both teams. Obviously, we were
prepared. We were preparing to play there [in Waco]. Unfortunately, that didn’t
happen. But they put it aside. It was something they had no control over and
they came here and battled. Four and a half hours later, it paid off.”

“We were up 6-5, serving for it in doubles and it’s a point
that you have to get. In college tennis, doubles is the key. We put ourselves
on the verge of winning it and came up a little bit short.”
On the transition to singles…
“We talked about it in the locker room. We talked about
getting out to a good start, having to get off to a good start. You know what,
they got up on us for 25 minutes real good. But the last hour of the match, we
beat them up pretty good. All of a sudden, that’s why you get the doubles
point. That’s why you get out to good leads in singles because anything can
happen in college tennis when the match is tied at three all and there’s two
guys playing in front of everybody for the point.”

“I think that it relaxed us a little. We struggled with

ever remember; so when we do win the doubles we feel that much more confident

“There are always adjustments. When you are dealing with a
group of seven or eight guys that are playing, you are making a lot of minor
adjustments but no major adjustments. We had a really great day today. To lose

On the match…
“We knew it was going to be tough. There is not an easy
match this year. They were rough and it was a tough match. The doubles point,
just getting that with tiebreakers here. We didn’t get off to the best start in
the doubles. But we finished that and got the doubles point. I think we were a
bit overwhelmed by their physicality in doubles. They came out and punched us
in the mouth and rocked us a bit, but I was proud of guys re-gathering and getting
back into the match. We were down a couple of breaks that we were able to fight
back, and win close tiebreakers.”
On Galeono and Rios…
“Scoreboard watching from down here, but those guys got off
to great starts. Diego was able to roll right through, and Felipe had a little
bit more of a battle in the second just watching the scoreboard. You guys have
been around college tennis enough to know that momentum is massive.”

On the match…
“We made some mistakes in doubles. When we were in the
tiebreaker at one, we were serving 1-2 and we didn’t call aggressive plays
there. We had a second serve and we didn’t poach on it. We did that twice in a
row. They hit great returns cross-court down at our feet, which got us in trouble.
Now you are down 1-4 and you are in a huge hole. Getting out of a hole like
that against a team like that is tough. We were too passive there with the play
calling. Then serving at the tiebreaker at two doubles, we were serving at both
their strengths. At 5-4 we are up a mini-break and we serve backhand, backhand,
which is stupid, and you can’t do that. We lose a doubles point against the
number two team in the nation when they are arguably better than us at one spot
maybe two. Now we are really in a hole, and mathematically getting out of that
hole is tough. Our guys did a good job fighting and putting them in position.
Everything has to go right at that point, and it did not go right for us at one
singles today. Julian is a great player. We knew that it was a difficult match,
and we did not serve particularly well. We were not going to beat the number
two player in the nation or number two team if you are not playing smart and
aggressive in certain moments, and not serving well.

I think Georgia beats Oklahoma. Oklahoma has looked ready to lose for some time now. I think this is finally the time.
Both Farris Gosea and Jared Hiltzik get assessed point penalties after getting overruled on line calls three times. There was even an extra official on Gosea's court to make the last overrule. The official was on the far sideline but made the call on the baseline.
It doesn't justify bad line calls, but Tarheels were heckling J Hiltzik with remarks about his girlfriend. Why do they feel the need to stoop to this level, especially when their game was obviously good enough to do the talking? Schnur turned to twitter to taunt Illini fans as well. Classless.
I watched a lot of teams play this year in person, and UNC was by far the most obnoxious and juvenile.
Isn't Søren Hess-Olesen ranked #4 in the country in singles? Don't know why he's listed as #86.

I thought I fixed that earlier it must not have took. Every box score that came from the NCAA had an error somewhere - I missed this one initially.
