2/23 Oracle/ITA Men's Rankings Release

The first computer rankings of the year are out with the ACC occupying three of the top five spots. North Carolina is sitting pretty comfortably at #1 with a nine point lead over #2 Virginia though Virginia has an almost eleven point lead over Ohio State.

As a reminder these rankings are based off last week's rankings, which were done by the rankings committee, so I'd expect to see a lot more shifting next week too. This week the computer used each team's 4 best wins but for the next 3 weeks it'll use each team's 5 best wins.

My projections were good up top but were off a little towards the bottom - I had a couple of spreadsheet errors that through my numbers off plus I made some educated guesses on teams ranked outside the top 75 (Troy, UC Irvine, South Alabama) that ended up being further down than I thought.

There were also a couple of keying errors in the ITA's computer where 2 teams had keyed a win in as a road win, thus getting the 10% bonus, when in reality it was either a home or neutral site win. Those two mistakes that I found will be corrected by the ITA.

The following teams made double-digit increases versus the last rankings:
#18 Kentucky (29)
#39 Purdue (25)
#21 Penn State (23)
#43 Iowa (23)
#50 Middle Tennessee State (21)
#36 Wisconsin (20)
#30 Rice (19)
#20 Oregon (17)
#28 Michigan (17)
#31 Washington (17)
#53 Utah (16)
#27 UC Santa Barbara (15)
#17 Memphis (11)
#40 Denver (11)

These 10 teams entered the rankings after being unranked
#58 BYU - wins over then #67 Boise State an #69 Utah
#59 Penn - wins over then #40 Dartmouth and #71 Middle Tennessee State
#62 UC Irvine - win over then #54 Old Dominion
#63 Georgia State - win over then #65 Wichita State
#66 Abilene Christian - win over then #58 UC Davis
#69 Western Michigan - win over then #64 Purdue
#72T Portland - win over then #73 Fresno State (dropped out)
#72T Santa Clara win over then #73 Fresno State (dropped out)
#74 South Alabama - win over then #74 Florida Gulf Coast (dropped out)
#75 North Florida - win over then ranked #60 Cornell

Chances are that Portland, Santa Clara, and South Alabama will drop out next week since the good win that got them in isn't as good any more.
