Fall Phenoms

The 2015 fall season is in the books so let's take a look back at the guys that were a head above the rest. Of course you've got to start out with the guys that claimed the 3 fall majors which were the Oracle ITA Masters, the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American, and the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. After that I look at the guys that made strong runs in majors as well as several other tournaments.

Dominik Koepfer (Tulane Sr/14.31) - What a tremendous fall for the senior from Furtwangen, Germany with a Championship, Runner-Up, and a Semifinal appearance at the 3 fall slams. Koepfer beat 10 ranked opponents with 8 of them being ranked inside the top 50.

Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Virginia Jr/14.79) - Stout fall from the junior from Charlotte, North Carolina as Kwiatkowski won the All-Americans in both singles and doubles and also the UVA Ranked 1+1 with a win over a vastly improved Joao Monteiro in the finals. Kwiatkowski also won the UVA Ranked 1+1 last year by beating the ITA #1 Seb Stiefelmeyer. Kwiatkowski has gone 29-4 the last 2 falls after missing the fall season in his freshman year with an injury. Not bad for a guy who may only play #3 singles this season.

Cameron Norrie (TCU Soph/14.68) - The sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand only played in 2 collegiate events this fall but he won one of them by taking the inaugural Oracle ITA Masters with 4 wins over top 25 opponents. Norrie also won a Pro Futures singles title in Mansfield, Texas with several quality wins including a win over former Georgia #1 Wil Spencer.

Andre Goransson (Cal Jr/14.39) - The junior from Hollviken, Sweden won every match this fall except for his two meetings with Tulane's Dominik Koepfer.  Goransson played 3 events and won one, finished as runner-up in one, and made the semis in the other. He and Florian Lakat also won a doubles title at the Battle in the Bay Classic.

Joao Monteiro (Virginia Tech Sr/14.33) - The senior from Porto, Portugal had an outstanding fall and is the recipient of my Hard Worker Award after playing 23 singles matches and an additional 18 doubles matches.  Monteiro won the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional, made it to the quarterfinals of the NIICs, was the runner-up at the UVA Ranked 1+1.  He and Andreas Bjerrehus won the doubles title at the UVA Ranked 1+1 and were runner-ups in the consolation draw at the All-Americans.

Tom Fawcett (Stanford Soph/14.35) - The sophomore from Winnetka, Illinois only played in two collegiate events but he made the semis in one and the quarters in the other. Every opponent Fawcett faced was ranked except for Georgia freshman Walker Duncan (freshman can't be ranked since first poll is based on previous season). Fawcett also made it to the quarters at the Claremont Future before falling to UCLA's Mackenzie McDonald 6-2, 6-4.

Arthur Rinderknech (Texas A&M Soph/14.50) - The sophomore from Paris, France followed up a nice freshman year (17-4) by winning the USTA/ITA Texas Regional, going undefeated at the Texas A&M Conference Challenge, and making it to the quarterfinals at the NIICs. He and Shane Vinsant were also the doubles runner-ups at the Texas Regional.

Kevin Konfederak (Georgia Gwinnett Soph/13.91) - The sophomore from Buenos Aires, Argentina dominated the competition at the NAIA level in singles by winning the South Regional, the NAIA National Championship, and the All-Division Super Bowl National Championship and he also added doubles championships at the last two. Konfederak made a run all the way to the finals at the University of Georgia hosted Southern Intercollegiates with one stellar win stacked on top of another. Konfederak was the Small College representative at the National Indoor Intercollegiates and took both of his Division 1 opponents to 3-sets before falling.

Christopher Eubanks (Georgia Tech Soph/13.84) - The sophomore from Atlanta made nice runs into the semifinals of both the NIICs and Southern Intercollegiates. Eubanks picked up straight sets wins over #7 Nicolas Alvarez, #20 Tom Fawcett, and #93 Herkko Pollanen at the NIICs before falling 7-5 in the 3rd to Cal's Andre Goransson.

Felipe Soares (Texas Tech Sr/14.01) - The senior from Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil and his doubles partner Hugo Dojas (Sr/Robeirao Preto, Brazil) were the NCAA doubles runner-ups last year and they picked up where they left off by winning both the National Indoor Intercollegiates and the USTA/ITA Texas Regional. Soares also started off the fall extremely strong in singles by winning 6 of his first 7 with 5 of those wins coming over ranked opponents. One of those ranked wins came over Virginia's Ryan Shane who is the ITA preseason #2 and defending NCAA singles champion.

Benjamin Lock (Florida State Sr/14.19) - The 6'7" redshirt senior from Harare, Zimbabwe had a successful fall at both the collegiate and professional levels.  He won the singles consolation championship at the NIICs and made the semis at the Oracle/ITA Masters. All 5 of his collegiate losses came against preseason top 15 opponents. Lock won his first professional singles title in Mozambique and followed that up with a pair of semifinal appearances.

Chase Perez-Blanco (Florida Soph/13.89) - The sophomore from Miami made a nice run in each of the 3 fall tournaments he played in. In my opinion, Perez-Blanco's most impressive results came in the All-Americans when he beat David Wilczynski, Dominic Cotrone, and Tin Ostojic with each expected to play in the top 2 of their respective lineups. Perez-Blanco split last year at #4 and #5 singles where he went 14-4 after an 11-7 fall so his results show he's ready to make a move into the upper half of the lineup.

Hunter Johnson (SMU Redshirt Jr/13.26) - The redshirt junior from New Braunfels, Texas made a nice return to the courts after sitting out last year following his transfer from Louisiana-Lafayette. Johnson made a terrific run to the finals of the Texas Regional by beating 3 ranked players before falling to Arthur Rinderknech. He teamed up with his twin brother, Yates, to win the doubles title at the Jack Kramer Classic and they also made it to the semifinals of the Texas Regional. Hunter went 16-0 in dual match play at the #5 and #6 positions in his last season at Lafayette.

David Wilczynski (Stanford Soph/13.84) - The Richboro, PA native went 9-3 on the fall with ranked wins over #36 Florian Lakat (Cal), #62 Mitch Stewart (Washington), #67 Daan Maasland (Oregon), #108 Gordon Watson (Florida), and #123 JC Aragone (Virginia). Wilczynski won the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional and won his opening round match at the NIICs before falling to #12 Jared Hiltzik (Illinois) in the second round.

Konrad Zieba (Northwestern Jr/14.28) - The junior from Glenview, Illinois went 7-2 and beat everyone not named Thai-Son Kwiatkowski. Zieba came through qualies at the All-Americans and made it all the way to the quarterfinals by beating #13 Roberto Cid (S. Florida), #23 Dovydas Sakinis (Dartmouth), #26 Tin Ostojic (Wichita St), #64 Filip Bergevi (Cal), and #92 Jake Douglas (Washington). Zieba also beat #107 Max Hinnisdaels (Auburn) in the first round of the NIICs. Zieba also picked up his first ATP point when he made it to the second round at the Poland F3 Future and two weeks later he made to the semifinals at the Poland F5.

Nick Crystal (USC Jr/14.14) - The junior Waccabuc, New York went 9-3 and made the finals of the Cajun Classic, the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional, and the quarterfinals of the All-Americans. Crystal went 4-3 against ranked opposition with the wins coming over #18 Felipe Soares (Texas Tech), #39 Beck Pennington (Kentucky), #66 Arjun Kadhe (Oklahoma St), and #91 Justin Butsch (LSU).

Max Hinnisdaels (Auburn Jr/13.69) - The junior from Saint-Genesius-Rode, Belgium went 12-3 and won the USTA/ITA Southern Regional and won both a singles and doubles (w Dante Saleh) flight at the Duke Bonk Invitational.  Hinnisdaels faced 3 ranked opponents and went 1-2 with the win coming over #71 Simon Norenius (NC State).

Jose Salazar (Arkansas Jr/13.99) - The junior from Tenerife, Spain and recent Oklahoma transfer went 17-5 and won the consolation draw at the SEC Fall Classic. Salazar also made the quarterfinals at the Southern Intercollegiates, the semifinals at the Georgia Tech Invitational, and won 5 matches at the All-Americans before falling to USC's Max De Vroome in the second round of qualies. Not a bad fall for a guy that was Oklahoma's #7 singles player last year.

Sam Matheson (Liberty Jr/13.15) - The junior from Tauranga, New Zealand went 10-4 and picked up wins over #101 Hugo Dojas (Texas Tech), NAIA #6 Matias Hatem (Ga Gwinnett), and likely Arkansas #1 Michael Redlicki. Matheson won 6 matches at the All-Americans by coming through pre-qualies and he made it the final of round of qualies before falling to Georgia's Walker Duncan.

Hugo Di Feo (Ohio State Redshirt Freshman/14.15) - The heralded freshman finally got to step on the court as a Buckeye (after having to sit out last year due to NCAA eligibility issues) and the Montreal native didn't disappoint as he made a run to the quarterfinals in his first collegiate event. Di Feo actually had 2 match points in his quarterfinal match versus Dominik Koepfer at the All-Americans but a poor angled overhead cost him his shot at the semifinals.

Dan Little (Utah Fresh/12.78) - The freshman from London went 13-2 and won a singles title in his debut tournament. Little just missed out on a shot to go to New York for the National Indoors after falling in the finals of the Mountain Regional to Denver's Diogo Rocha 6-4 in the third.

Alfredo Perez (Florida/13.57) - The Coral Gables, Florida native went 11-4 and won 7 matches in a row to come from pre-qualies all the way to the main draw at the All-Americans. Perez went 2-3 against ranked players with wins over #69 Jaan Kononov (UMBC) and #120 Strong Kirchheimer (Northwestern).

Walker Duncan (Georgia/13.46) - The Atlanta, Georgia native went 14-7 and 2-3 against ranked opponents with the wins over #90 William Bushamuka (Kentucky) and #125 Mac Styslinger (Virginia). Duncan qualified for the main draw at the All-Americans and won his opening round match against Bushamuka before falling to Stanford's Tom Fawcett.

Logan Smith (USC/13.47) - The pride of San Diego went 10-4 and made it to the finals of the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional before falling to UCLA's Martin Redlicki 6-4 in the 3rd. In route to the finals Smith beat teammate Max De Vroome, San Diego's Jordan Angus, and UCLA's Joseph DiGiulio among others.
